Heart Animals
Have the students cut hearts of several different sizes. On an 81/2 by 11sheet of paper arrange the hearts to form different animals. For example: cat- medium sized heart in the middle. 2 small hearts for ears; place 2small hearts at bottom of medium heart with the points facing each other.  Cut a short piece paste on one of those for a tail. Students can come up with all kinds of animals out of the different size hearts.

Love Letters
Materials: envelopes, "giveaway" stamps, paper
Directions:
Provide paper, "giveaway" stamps (Easter seals, Christmas seals, etc.) and envelopes in your writing center, so that students can
write "love" letters and Valentines to their friends. Set up a "pretend" post office so that a "mail carrier" can deliver the letters.

Paper Plate Hearts
Fold two paper plates in half like tacos.  Slip them inside each other with the open ends facing each other to form a heart.  Staple on each side and decorate if you choose.  These can be filled with valentines or candy.

Valentine Names
Early in February I send home a class list of names from which students write Valentine cards.  Homework for that week revolves around that list.  Students alphabetize the list (by first name, then by last), categorize the names by various attributes, including the number of syllables, number of vowels, etc. Venn diagrams can be made by grouping names with double letters, those with consonants at the beginning, or both.  Listing words that rhyme with each name (be careful!) and making fractions that show the ratio of girls to boys are just some of the many ideas that can inspire some fun homework.

Valentines Heart Man
Materials: Red, pink, and black paper
Have your kids make a heart. Then, have them cut 2 long strips of paper. Fold them back and forth and glue them on to make legs. Make 2 shorter ones to make arms. Add eyes and facial features with the extra paper.. You have a heart man.

Have your students write Valentine "love" notes using the candy hearts with the words written on them. Cut out hearts from red construction paper, use candy to write love note. Glue candy onto the red heart. Then glue heart on a white doily. Students may read notes to classmates or take home to parents.

Mr. and Miss Sweetheart
My students and I decorate a big box with Valentine decorations. The top the box has an opening so the students put in all valentine cards that they get from classmates, and friends. On Valentine´s Day we open the box and give out all the cards; the boy and the girl that gets the most cards will be crowned as Mister and Miss Sweetheart or friendship. Crowns are made of paper and decorated with hearts. Also we make a cape done of crepe paper beautifully decorated with red, pink and violet hearts. Students really enjoy this activity.
