February Holidays

We need some ideas on the Presidents, Black History, Healthy Hearts...

Lincoln Heads/Tails Tally
Give each child a penny.  Have the students toss the coin 25 (or how ever many) times.  Tally each time it lands either heads or tails. This is a good time to practice tally marks and counting by 5's.

Penny Pictures
I give each child a penny and a small paper plate.  I have them try to turn their plate into a penny by trying to copy it.  They come out really cute.  I usually decorate the border of a bulletin board with them.

Wizard of Oz
My class studies the "Wizard of Oz" during the month of February and March. The tin man's desire for a heart is a way to lead into a discussion and to incorporate literature into the lesson. You have to love that story!!

Black History and Women in History
We do a hallway bulletin board combining Black History and Women in History. Kindergarten children bring in photos, magazine pictures, articles and posters. We hang them in the hallway and discuss them in a hallway presentation. Children are also urged to bring in pictures of their own moms and grandmothers and aunts. They make history every day! It is fun to do and very relevant to every child in my class. We headline it with, "Black History and Women in History" should be celebrated every month!
